A glass of water can look perfectly clear and still carry dissolved substances that affect its taste, smell and quality. For homeowners who want a higher standard at the kitchen tap, reverse osmosis drinking water offers one of the most thorough forms of point-of-use filtration available.

Unlike a basic carbon filter, a reverse osmosis system is designed to reduce a broad range of dissolved contaminants, not simply improve chlorine taste. It can be an excellent addition to a health-focused home, particularly when paired with whole-home filtration that protects the water used for showering, cooking, washing and cleaning.

What is reverse osmosis drinking water?

Reverse osmosis, often called RO, is a filtration process that pushes water through a very fine semi-permeable membrane. That membrane allows water molecules to pass while rejecting many dissolved particles and compounds that are larger than water molecules.

A quality under-sink RO system usually works in stages. Pre-filters first protect the membrane by reducing sediment and chlorine or chloramines. The RO membrane then does the finer separation work. It is still worth being precise about claims. No filtration system should be selected on broad promises alone. A water assessment and the performance data for the specific system matter. A contaminant can only be addressed reliably when the filter is designed, tested and maintained to do so.

Why a whole-home system and RO work well together

Reverse osmosis treats a relatively small amount of water at one location, usually beneath the kitchen sink. That makes it ideal for the water your family drinks, cooks with and uses for pet bowls.

But drinking water is only one part of daily exposure and comfort. Chlorine or chloramines can still affect the water in your shower, bath, laundry and appliances. Sediment can build up in fixtures. It removes beneficial minerals too

RO reduces many dissolved substances indiscriminately, including naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium. For some people, that very low-mineral profile is the appeal. Others prefer water that has a little more body and taste.

A remineralisation stage can add selected minerals back into the water after filtration. This may improve taste and create a more balanced drinking experience. Whether this is desirable comes down to personal preference, the incoming water and your broader diet. Drinking water should not be treated as the primary source of essential dietary minerals.

It produces wastewater

RO membranes need a flow of water to rinse rejected contaminants away. This means an RO unit sends some water to waste while making purified water. The ratio varies considerably between systems and is affected by water pressure, temperature and membrane condition.

Modern, well-designed units can be far more efficient than older systems, but wastewater remains part of the process. Who is reverse osmosis best suited to?

RO can be particularly worthwhile for families who are concerned about dissolved contaminants in their mains water, who notice unwanted taste or odour, or who want greater control over the water used for drinking and cooking. It is also a strong option for people who already have whole-home filtration and want a final, high-performance stage at the kitchen tap.

It may be less suitable where water use must be kept to an absolute minimum, where cupboard space is very limited, or where a household wants only a modest improvement in chlorine taste. In those cases, a high-quality carbon filtration solution may be sufficient.

For rainwater households, the decision needs even more care. Rainwater quality can change with roof condition, tank hygiene, weather, animal activity and plumbing. RO can be useful, but it should form part of a properly designed treatment train that may include sediment filtration, carbon filtration and UV disinfection.

Questions worth asking before installation

The best system is not necessarily the one with the most stages. It is the one matched to your water source, household needs and expectations. Before installing an RO unit, consider what you are trying to reduce, how many people will use it, whether you have existing whole-home filtration and how you prefer your water to taste.

Ask about the system's contaminant reduction performance, filter-change schedule, wastewater ratio, tank capacity, water pressure requirements and whether remineralisation is included. Also ask who will maintain it. A premium filtration system should come with clear guidance and dependable local support, not leave you to interpret replacement schedules and plumbing requirements on your own.
